Covenant Membership

Come and be a Member of our Church!

How can you become a member?

I’m glad you asked…

We place a high value on membership here at FBC Smyer because we know that the Scriptures place a high value on membership.

Here’s a brief outline of what that path entails:

  • Attending a New Members Class

    • This is a class we offer once quarter, if necessary, where we explain who we are historically, where God has taken us, and where we stand now. The bulk of the class is spent walking through our 100 year history, Statement of Faith and Constitution, along with fielding any questions you may have about the church.

  • Providing a bit of information about yourself

    • After the Membership Class, we ask you to prayerfully consider the commitment to being a church member, while also helping the elders get to know you better. Through questions provided in the New Members Class, we ask you to give a brief summary of the gospel in your own words, to let us know your testimony of how the gospel has changed your life, and why you want to become a member.

  • Meeting with an elder

    • This meeting is primarily for the purposes of getting to know you. It’s important to us that the members of Fellowship have an expressed faith in Christ, clarity on the gospel and develop a relationship with their elders.

  • Affirmation of membership by the elders

    • The final step of membership is being presented to the church where you will affirm the Member Covenant and other members will affirm their covenant to you and one another.

This is our simple covenant!

With the aid of the Holy Spirit, I will be resolved to…

  • Live a disciplined life, showing real Christian love and holiness in everything I do. (2 Tim. 2:15; Gal. 5:22–23; 1 Pet. 1:15–16)

  • Value my relationships with other believers, work hard to keep our church united, and use my God-given gifts to encourage everyone to love and serve one another. (Eph. 4:1–3; Heb. 10:24–25; 1 Cor. 12:4–7)

  • Faithfully contribute my time, abilities, and money as God blesses me, so our church can keep sharing the gospel both here at home and around the world. (1 Cor. 16:2; 2 Cor. 9:6–8)

  • Be diligent in growing as a true disciple of Jesus Christ by regularly studying the Bible, faithfully attending church, and doing everything I can to strengthen my faith and grow in my knowledge of God. (2 Pet. 3:18; Acts 2:42; Col. 2:6-7)

  • Teach the Bible to my family and friends whenever I have the chance, praying they will come to know and trust Jesus as their Savior. (Deut. 6:6–7; Eph. 6:4; 2 Tim. 2:2)

  • Be willing to both give and receive gentle correction and guidance with humility and love. (Gal. 6:1–2; Eph. 4:15; Col. 3:16)

  • Regularly pray for our church, my fellow believers, our pastors and leaders, and for people who still need to meet Jesus. (1 Tim. 2:1–4; Eph. 6:18; Col. 4:2–3)
